Questions from Rob.

The Patriot Act's Section 215 requires American bookstores and public libraries to surrender to the FBI lists of books or other materials that customers or patrons have accessed

Section 215 which gives the federal government the authority to request items from a person's home, medical or psychiatric records and lists of readers who have checked out certain books from a public library, among other things, without producing "probable cause."

Supporters of Section 215 state that without the powers it grants, the ability of the federal government to guard against terrorist attacks like the ones on 9/11 will be dangerously restricted. Detractors of Section 215 worry that those same investigative powers pose long-term dangers to the civil rights of American citizens that outweigh any terrorist attack

Do you think these powers are needed?

Soon, patrons of the Naperville Public Library - at least those wanting to use the Internet - will need more than a library card.
They'll give a fingerprint.
The library says it's doing everything it can to protect patrons.

We may be entering an age where we will view librarians as the equivalent of FBI extension agents

Do you think public libraries a threat to security?

Do you think trading privacy to fight terrorism worth it or not?

Morals without Religion possible? Can an atheist have morals?

It’s like the fbi to worry about libraries when the whole world has access to the internet.

Isn’t Democracy based on civil liberties? Without our civil liberties we are no longer free, if we’re no longer free what are we fighting for?

Morals are a product of rational thought.

Terrorist are probably the most physical threat to America, our own government is probably the greatest threat to our freedom

Patches, I think this whole push to erode our civil liberties has to do with the government's need to pinpoint exactly who poses a threat to their agenda!!!I think it has little to do with terrorism!!!If a terrorist still needs to check out a book from the library on how to commit terrorism, then I would say that they pose little or no threat to begin with.

To answer your questions:

No , I don't think libraries pose a threat to our security!!Again, I think the government wants to keep tabs on who is checking out books that contain knowledge that goes against it's version of events!!

No, I don't think trading privacy to fight terrorism is worth it!The FBI has admitted that it lacks agents in the Middle East , where they fear terrorists live and plot!I don't think that eroding our freedoms will do anything to stop terrorists who are trained abroad!!As for possible terrorists that may live in the US, I don't see why they would need added powers to uncover them, they already have enough powers to deal with drug dealers and mob bosses. Why would they need these extra powers?

Yes , morals without religion is not only possible, it is reality. Religion is not the sole source of morals!!!Morals come from a variety of avenues with religion being just one of them.

I think an atheist most certainly can have morals!!The disbelief in God or Gods does not necessarily equate to not having morals!!Morals can be taught by parents , who might also teach one that there is no GOD!!

These were very good and thought provoking questions Patches, thanks!
