Could This Happen?

Cincinnati Ohio?

A report on United States intelligence to be made public on Thursday concludes that the government has failed to respond to the dire threat posed by unconventional weapons.

Three and a half years after Dec. 7, 1941, the United States had built and equipped an army and navy that had crossed two oceans, the English Channel and the Rhine; it had already won Germany's surrender and was two months from vanquishing Japan,"

Rob believes this is the result of going to war with Iraq, not of any inherent failure of intelligent agencies. (Neither Patch or Rob believes that after watching and spying on Iraq since the end of the Gulf War to the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom that Iraq could have done anything without American intelligent agencies knowing it.) If the Bush administration hadn’t been so focused on going to war with Iraq they could have spent all the time, energy, and resources that was spent on the war and put it all toward the war on terrorism and national security and the Untied States would be a much safer place then it is now. Rob thinks the administration is deflecting criticism to the intelligent agencies and away from their failure to protect America from terrorism. The Administration is trying to make the point that the war is accomplishing this goal and we can only hope so. Rob says that is why it is now of up most importance that we succeed in Iraq but there is two problems going on. One the Bush Administration had no plan for the peace and American forces are still planning day by day on what to do. Two already his administration is being detracted from Iraq toward Iran and Syria. (Here’s a kicker $700 million for an embassy in Iraq, with all the things that need done, $700 million for an embassy? What in the world would the United States want with a $700 million embassy in Iraq? Or any other country for that matter.) Another thing the administration has done to fight the war is make allies with countries with deep ties to terrorism, (Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to name two).
Rob thinks Americans had better start making the Bush Administration responsible for their actions or non actions. The conservatives that elected him and most of the current congress had better stop beating up on liberals and start getting some answers from the Bush Administration for our lack of national security.
The Bush Administration is issuing a security alert almost every week on the possibility of a nuclear device being brought into the United States and set off in a major metropolitan area. Now there are one or two things going on. One the administration is hyping the chance of this happening for some ulterior motive or two a nuclear device is going to go off someday soon. Between container ships and the open Mexican border there is not much stopping a nuclear device being smuggled into the United States? All one has to do is look at how much drugs cross this border to see that a nuclear device would not be much of a problem.

Well Rob and I got out today, first nice day of spring here in Cincinnati. Also I have Rob talked into doing some storm chasing as UFO activity is very low. Rob says we can do both, ok by me.
Rob says to post this.
"Each and every time the Bush Administration has an ersatz "Town Hall Meeting," it should be labeled as such with the disclaimer that the event is a staged, rehearsed event for hand picked supporters. The clear intent of the these events is to deceive--they are designed to look like something they are not, so it is important they be reported on in a way that informs viewers of what they are actually seeing. It is important that fake news not be able to pass for the real thing, so truth in labeling is vital."
I'm trying to my computer guy and transcriber (richc54) to change the layout of this blog without losing it. He's trying.
I guess we are all heading to Mingo this weekend for a visit (Sunday) Except Rob he's going to work on the van.
Notice the atmosphere on earth compared to the size of the earth, very thin, almost invisible. Needs all the protection we can give it. Earths atmosphere is a little over 100 miles thick, verses 8000 miles to earth's center. And out of that 100 miles humans can only use the first 5 or 6 miles.

Things I Didn't Know

Wood thrush

But birds do not have lips to form sounds, like humans do. Watch a bird sing and its beak will open but not move like our mouths do! How are the songs created? In a bird, below the larynx or windpipe is the syrinx. This part of their anatomy vibrates to create songs.. Changes in tones and melodies are created from muscles contracting and relaxing, forcing the air through the passage differently to form multiple sounds and tones, creating the beautiful melodies that we all love. Different species of birds may have varying numbers of these sound-creating muscles, with the birds having the highest number being able to produce the most varied sounds.

Donald Kroodsma is a renowned specialist in the interpretation of bird songs. His new book, The Singing Life of Birds: The Art and Science of Listening to Birdsong, describes how birds communicate and why. But Kroodsma is also the subject of another book -- about those who listen to birds. Kroodsma says song birds sing two song at the same time one on the left and one on the right then harmonize the two into song. Super Cool. He had recording of the two different tunes and then both together

Birdsong, by Don Kroodsma, details the work and passions of people who analyze the sounds of birds.
Listened to this on NPR today, amazing stuff.

From the Patch
Not much going on again today, more rain. That Rob had me searching the internet all day looking for any UFO sightings, nothing going on.
So some food for thought.

Back to ANWR.
Will drilling in ANWR destroy it; kill all the wildlife probably not. Destroy it as a pristine natural area, most likely.
Look at the North Slope and the pipe line to Valdes. The oil fields on the North Slope are hardly a tourist destination. Ecological disaster no, excepting the Exxon Valdes and just recently some nut shot a hole into the pipeline creating a huge oil spill. (This spill was every difficult to contain)But it also withstood an earthquake. The North Slope oil fields and the Alaska pipeline were built for much the same reason that drilling in ANWR is wanted. ( 1969 ) Ok what happened? Jobs, yes jobs were created but not many, not enough to make any measurable impact. Reduce our dependence on foreign oil, hardly. Bring a ton of money into the Alaskan State coffers, oh ya, make a few people very rich, oh ya, profit for oil companies probably.
So my argument is that drilling in ANWR will produce the same results. It will not produce many jobs, it will not reduce our dependence on foreign oil and it will not reduce the price of a gallon of gas.
OK, don’t drill what we have. One of the few protected pristine wild areas left in the world and the oil will be there if we ever truly need it. The oil has been there millions of years and most likely will stay there.
WE know why Alaska wants to drill, more money for them.
After the senate vote to drill we are learning things as citizens we needed to know before the vote. The oil companies are not so sure about the recoverable amount of oil in ANWR. WE now know that the test drilling results are being kept secret by the company that did the testing and the State of Alaska. Why? We also know that misinformation is given on how much land will be used, 5 acres, proponents say for a drill pad, but not saying how much land will be needed for all the other infrastructure, roads, and pipelines. As for being a great white nothing, Google up some photos and see for yourself.
If you are really concerned about America and its future and simply recognize that our dependence on Middle Eastern oil as a significant weakness, you need to demand President Bush and Congress to develop a program to make the United State independent of oil period.

Mexicans crossing the USA and Mexican border. Multi-National agricultural companies, mostly American (Archer Daniels Midland , Monsato ), but not all, are buying millions of acres of Mexican farm land, displacing millions of Mexican citizens to a jobless economy. Guess where they go to? To where the jobs are, wouldn’t you? The U.S. gets two things cheap strawberries and illegal aliens looking for work, work that we have. Right or wrong? I don’t know, but I think we Americans have some responsibly, we are not innocence. What’s the answer? Again I don’t know, but it’s not simple.

Great Book

This is going to be along blog, it’s what happens on a Holiday weekend when NASCAR isn’t running, the UFO van is out of service, and it’s raining. Rob and I are continuing to read “Miracle at Philadelphia” and discussing if Democracy can survive in the United States under a one party system. We are sure democracy can’t survive under a dictator or a theocracy, or under control of multinational corporations. We hope you read the blog just to give you something to think about, but we blog for therapeutic reasons and to make our own selves think.

From Rob.

If a particle moves faster than the speed of light, it must create a shockwave, and radiate energy. Cerenkov radiation is exactly that. Nothing can travel faster than the speed at which light travels *in a vacuum*. But, it's possible to slow light down in a medium other than vacuum. In such a medium, (air) it's possible to have a source of light that travels faster than light does *in that medium*. When this happens, you get the equivalent of a sonic boom for light: Cerenkov Radiation. ( Blue streak of light) Rob says we don’t see this when UFOs are zooming around. But he still hoping that there is some detectable infrared radiation left as a UFO travels through the atmosphere. We know that cell phone engineers kept seeing holes moving trough their networks and finally found out that it was US Air Force stealth planes. No reports off UFOs making these holes.

Patch asks, where would a catastrophic illness leave you?

President Bush and conservative Congress want tort reform would preclude malpractice claims like that which has paid for a lot Terry Schiavo's care. Bush wants a 250,000 dollar cap. How long would that last? They also want to stop funding on Medicaid that pays for the kind of care that someone like Terry Schiavo and many others who are not so severely brain damaged need all across this country. And they are trying to pass a bankruptcy bill to make it more difficult for families who suffer a catastrophic illness like Terry Schiavo's because they will not be able to declare chapter 7 bankruptcy and get a fresh start when the gargantuan medical bills become overwhelming.

If we continue to say Terry Schiavo has the right to live, ( in this type of case) are we not saying everyone has the right? And at the same time are we not saying that on one has the right to die? If President Bush and Congress steps in as it has tried to do are they not responsible for the cost? When your emotions come back to normal, think of the long term consequences of catastrophic illness. Patch wonders how many of the protesters would hang around if they were asked to contribute ah say $100 a month until this woman died, or regained consciousness? Or everyone chip in maybe $20 a year in taxes to help everyone? (medicaid)

From Patch and Rob.
We like the way bloggers are trying to hold the media accountable, but we think they should hold all media accountable, bloggers should start holding the Rush Limbaugh’s of the world accountable, and hold our selves accountable. WE don't like the way bloggers try to portray others as dumb or dumber, even if some bloggers are.
We would like to see bloggers become the watch dogs of government. To force all levels, local, state and federal to be truthful, ethical, and open. No matter if the government is trying to do something you like or dislike, no matter if you voted for someone or not we need to stop the lies, deceit, propaganda, and most of all the secrecy. Democracy will not last long the way things are going right now. A government for whatever reasons that does its business in secret and using propaganda to futher its agenda is no longer a democratic government. Patch and Rob don't care if the government is liberal, conservative or made up of aliens, it must be open and honest to the people they represent. If our representatives, as they do now, bury their true agendas deep in 1000 page congressional bills and late amendments to congressional bills we do not have true representation.

Rob gets it off his chest

Rob hiking 3-27-05

Take a hike and clear your mind

Rob says the problem now days with the world in general and the United States in particularly is cable TV and increasingly the internet. TV news blast people 24/7, with continuous updates and then the talking heads telling what it all means. People have no time to let emotions die down and for their brains and logic take over. TV is great at showing the emotional side of a story, not so good at getting the total story across. Then it’s the same thing over and over 24/7 until the story is blown way beyond context. This Terri Schiavo woman is a case in point. The tsunami flood is another. With millions of people dying because of not having basic health care, where’s the outrage, where’s the demand for justice and where is TV news? With millions of people across the world starving to death, where’s the outrage, where is the demand for justice, and where is TV news? Terri Schiavo makes a great TV shot; tsunami waves washing people to death make great TV. Health Care, people starving not so good TV. Main stream news is accused of slanting the news by the not so main stream news that slant the news even more. Then read the internet stuff. Bolggers and web sites for the most point use these cases to get a point across, their point. That’s fine, but it doesn’t stop there, any other point of view is stupid, irreligious or un-American. Just stop and think about it, the world and the universe doesn’t revolve around you, they revolve around all of us. The US Constitution and the system it has produced is most likely the greatest thing ever devised by man to resolve conflicts between people. That includes conflicts of religion. It’s more then time for the people of the United States to stop attacking this institution. Ok enough, could right a book on this stuff, back to UFOs, Patch does has me interested in storm chasing.

From the Patch; Rob isn’t the brightest UFO chaser that’s came down the pike but I think he’s got the basics right. He also says he doesn’t exclude himself.

Want to laugh, watch “Keeping Up Appearances” it’s on PBS.

Want to read a good book, “Miracle at Philadelphia; The Story of the Constitutional Convention May to September 1787” by Catherine Drinker Bowen.

Rob can fix the van

From the Patch
Rob checked the UFO van today. He said it should be no problem, new tie rod, stabilizer bar, upper and lower ball joints, new rim and tire, and new brakes just because they are right there.

Rob doesn’t think UFO’s move by acceleration, but by some kind of state of energy change. He thinks that if it was a change of acceleration, you would have the noise of breaking the sound barrier and a lightening bolt effect at near speed of light. He thinks this change of state, energy will leave a thermal image, he also thinks the Aliens can control the rate of change. otherwise you would not be able to see them move. I think Rob is nuts and I'm trying to talk him into chasing storms, at least for the next couple months or until another bunch of UFO sightings start. The storm chaser guys have lots of gear in the van.

Patch Questions

Do we believe in the courts and the rule of law? Or are we a nation of political expediency?
Do we believe in the privacy rights of the individual?
Do we believe in the sanctity of marriage?
Do we believe in the Constitution and the separation of powers?
Do we believe in science fact instead of science fiction?

Rob prefers science fiction.

Another question; Does President Bush have any idea what Social Security means to most people?

A Rob question; have you noticed how the Bush Administration and Congress keep blaming the intelligent agencies for 9/11? Do you really think American intelligent agencies were/are that inept? They sure make a good whipping boy, can’t, won’t and don’t have to explain themselves.

Thoughts From Patch

This is why the Army gave Rob the boot.
From the Patch
Associated Press
March 23, 2005 IMAX0324
CHARLESTON, S.C. -— IMAX theaters in several Southern cities have decided not to show a film on volcanoes out of concern that its references to evolution might offend those with fundamental religious beliefs.
The film, "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea,'' makes a connection between human DNA and microbes inside undersea volcanoes.
All Patch can say is, better read “The Handmaids Tale”. Surly Americans are not going to let fundamental religions determine what we watch, read, and learn.

Astronomers said yesterday that they, or at least their telescopes, had laid eyes for the first time on planets beyond the solar system. Using the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope and careful timing, teams studying two planets were able to distinguish the glow of the planets' infrared radiation from the overwhelming glare of their parent stars.
Rob sure hopes he’s around when Aliens reveal themselves.
Executives at General Motors said yesterday that they wanted union workers to accept the same health benefit cuts already taken by white-collar workers.
Medicare's financial outlook was "much worse than Social Security's" and predicted that the monthly Medicare premiums paid by almost all Americans 65 and older would rise by 12 percent next year after a 17 percent increase this year.
Rob says and he’s not being funny, health care is going to kill us. All ready 45 million Americans have no health care ( insurance ) and as cost continue to rise, this number can only grow.
The PatchDog 3

Rob Wrecked the VanMad
Yesterday we took the van for a test run. It was not a good day, rained too much to get any real testing done. Rob thinks the infrared detector might not have enough range, he said it depends on how strong a signal a UFO gives off. The range is more or less then 1.5 kilometers and Rob says if a UFO is that close and you can’t see it, a detector isn’t going to be any help. So on the way home I’m looking around inside the van, I tell Rob, man you messed up. How? Rob didn’t leave any room for Hampton, no place for a car seat. Well Rob looks at me, looks around in the van, then tells me it’s my fault. He says I should have noticed, all I do is watch him work. Then WHAM, Rob drove the van off the road into a ditch. Rob got the van home today, not damaged to bad. Rob said nothing he can’t fix and none of the equipment was damaged. Week to 10 days and we’ll be back in business. That Rob is something, you can’t keep him down on this UFO stuff. Guess the Patch will have to keep a closer eye on Rob.

A Few Things Patch Noticed

The Bush budget provides an extra $150 million for that program (faith-based initiative), aimed at encouraging churches and other charitable groups to help those in need. But the budget then dumps onto these organizations the burdens arising from tens of billions of dollars of cuts in programs for the poor, the handicapped, and those otherwise disadvantaged

In the past four years, the number of immigrants into the US, legal and illegal, has closely matched the number of new jobs. (US Labor Department)

President Bush calls for giving millions of illegal immigrants a kind of guest-worker status as a legal path to US citizenship.

Meanwhile, US border patrols spend millions of dollars a year trying to keep illegals out.

What employers really want in many cases by hiring immigrants is to hold down wage costs, experts say.

RYAN SAGER: "In coming years, political historians might look back and try to pinpoint the day or week or month that the Republican Party shed the last vestiges of its small-government philosophy. If and when they do, the week just past should make the short list. For it was in this last week that the Republican-controlled Congress made it clear that it sees no area of American life -- none too trivial and none too intimate -- that the federal government should not permeate with its power."
Having intervened in this state issue in 2005, future Republicans will have a hard time urging federal restraint in the name of decentralization.
Republicans will now bear greater responsibility for the rising cost of health care. That is, if the elephantine federal government has become so energetic - some might say paternalistic - that it reaches into local courtroom dramas in the name of preserving life, then that same GOP Establishment will have to deal with the cost of keeping such people alive
Will Republicans dare say that their "culture of life" extends only to those who can pay?

We are reminded that the media, especially cable news, can turn a tragic news story into a soap opera.
